The Reason

This blog has been created so that we can have a place to talk about the books that speak to us. Here, we will talk about whether we think books should be challenged or banned in high schools, and we will have a chance to talk with each other about the ideas that we hold as truths in our readings.

Enders Game by Orson Scott Wells is a must read book because it tests the reader with a thought provoking question about morality, a challenging topic about what the reader thinks is right, and an interesting theme that argues that duty is more important than morality and happiness.
In this book Wells argues that duty is more important than happiness. During this book Wells is constantly reminding the reader that following rules is better to do than thinking for yourself. Ender is realizing that his life is not his own, he is being used by everyone. Enders sister Valentine says to Ender “welcome to the human race. Nobody controls his own life, Ender. The best you can do is choose the roles given to you by good people, by people who love you.”( Wells, 107). Valentine is basically saying that Ender will never be able to “control” his own life. The best he can do is “choose” what he does with the roles that he is given. After hearing this Ender cannot decide if saving the “human” race is really worth giving up what he wants to do with his life.

  1. I have not read this book, but it sounds really interesting! You chose a perfect quote that conveys the message that duty is more important and choice is almost nonexistent nicely. This sounds like a great book for high schoolers to read. You integrated your quote nicely, but maybe a little more context after or in between would give the reader a little more detail. Overall, I really enjoyed your paragraph! Good job!

  2. I have also not read this book, but your paragraph has intrigued me! I really like the quote choice and I think it shows that he probably won't have happiness. I just wish you had a longer analysis so I could've gotten a better explaination of the quote and more of why it should be a must read! Your last sentence was reallly powerful and made me stop and think for a few moments! Overall, it was really nice!
