The novel Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott
Card, should be a must read book because it has purposes even when glorifying
immoral actions, it teaches lessons about life, and it makes students think
outside of their normal comfort zone. This
can be told through the distaste of immoral actions that Ender has, the
cluelessness Ender has for going to battle school and the lessons behind it,
and the reactions that Ender has about killing.
Ender’s
Game even makes readers
think outside of their comfort zone, in Ender’s shoes. Ender had just found out that when he was
using the battle simulator, he was actually killing the buggers, and that he
had blown up their planet. This is
Ender’s reaction: “Real. Not a
game. Ender’s mind was too tired to cope
with it all. They weren’t just points of
light in the air, they were real ships that he had fought with and real ships
he had destroyed. And a real world that
he had blasted into oblivion. He walked
through the crowd, dodging their congratulations, ignoring their hands, their
words, their rejoicing. When he got to
his own room he stripped off his clothes, climbed into bed, and slept” (Card
208). When
reading, the reader can get out of their comfort zone and go into the shoes of
Ender. This can help the reader
experience different things. Getting out of the reader’s comfort zone is
necessary because it gives a different experience to the reader. Without it, the story would be very different
and boring. It is by the transporting of
the reader into Ender’s shoes that allows the book to be interesting. It may be uncomfortable at some points
because of the bad experiences that Ender has, but it overall improves the book
and makes it a novel to be read.
I agree with you that this should be a must read book. It's important for readers to get out of their comfort zone when reading or else they may not get the full message of the book. I like the quote you chose because you were able to use it to prove the point of this paragraph well, and it explains the title -which I think gets more readers interested in reading a book that they previously may not have wanted to.
ReplyDeleteDrew, I agree that this should be a must-read book. I feel it could teach about morals, and the effects of killing. Killing might not be something a high-school kid might face but it could help us see how killing has many effects. This book could also be good for someone wanting to join the military or something of that sort because Ender is joining "battle school" which is kind of like joining the military. It could help someone see what challenges that they would have to face when joining something like the military.
