The Reason

This blog has been created so that we can have a place to talk about the books that speak to us. Here, we will talk about whether we think books should be challenged or banned in high schools, and we will have a chance to talk with each other about the ideas that we hold as truths in our readings.

Looking for Alaska: Must-read

The novel Looking for Alaska, by John Green, should be a must-read book because it teaches the life lesson of forgiveness, teaches that physical intimacy is less important than emotional closeness, and prepares a student to go out of their comfort zone to become a more rounded person.

Pudge decided to go to Culver Creek boarding school to find his own story. As Pudge contemplates about going he thinks,  Francois Rabelais. He was a poet. And his last words were "I go to seek a Great Perhaps. That's why I'm going. So I don't have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps”(Green 5). People go along life doing what we are supposed to do, but they always want a little more. They are never fully satisfied with what we have. But some people like Pudge take the matter into their own hands and seek out a missing piece of life. A Great Perhaps could be tangible, like a person, or intangible, like an event. Either way a Great Perhaps will change one’s life. It may not be good in the beginning, but they will most likely learn a life lesson from it. Pudge’s experience helps the student realize this. A Great Perhaps is an awesome thing people can discover. The process of finding one, going out of their comfort zone, is life changing enough. If people wait to seek a Great Perhaps, they could be waiting until they die to find themself. They find the type of things and people we do and do not like. People discover things about themselves we previously did not know.

  1. This sounds like an awesome book. I am really interested in learn about the Great Perhaps that Pudge finds. As the author say this helps the reader discover that they should find that thing that will complete their life. So therefore I agree that this book must be read. I think that it must be read for it motivates people to find themselves and also to realize that love is more than just that which society makes it out to be.

  5. I agree with everything you said here. The part that really strikes me is what you say about some people waiting until death to find the Great Perhaps. It reminds me of when Alaska tells Pudge she isn't going to sit around and imagine doing something great she is just going to do it. This makes me think that maybe Alaska too was seeking a Great Perhaps. ( If you are wondering how I knew this, I too chose to read this book).

  6. I have not read this book, however, I agree with everything you had to say. Pudge seems like an inspirational character searching for meaning in life. I have not been made aware of any aspect that could make this book challenged or even banned. It seems like a great way to motivate kids to find their "Great Perhaps" in life.

  7. I really like your quote choice, for the topic of this paragraph. The way you explained it was very captivating and Pudge was very well explained. When you explained what a Great Perhaps could be, I loved the word choice! This makes me wonder if Alaska really was all he was looking for and if there had been a different ending, would he have found/gotten his Great Perhaps?I have already read this book, and I want to read it again now!

  8. I agree with the fact that people must go out to look for what interests them. If every event in life was handed to the person living it, they would never be able to decide what they truly like. As commonly said, there is a difference between surviving and living. I believe that this difference is at least partially within being out of your comfort zone. By being outside what you know, you are able to experience more and even find something new you like. The fact this book portrays the motif of a "Great Perhaps" is a wonderful reason for me to look into reading this book. This reasoning definitely leads me to side with you in the fact that your book should be a Must-Read.
