The
novel the curious incident of the dog in
the night-time, by Mark Haddon, is be a must-read book because it creates
an intellectual opportunity for the reader to think, it addresses a
controversial issue in a unique way, and it makes the reader question the text.
The
curious incident of the dog in the night-time creates an intellectual
opportunity for the reader to think through the main character Christopher. He
is a very smart teenage boy who is telling the reader what he thinks and knows.
Christopher says, “The word metaphor means
carrying something from one place to another, and it comes from the Greek μετα (which means from one place to another) and φερειν
(which means to carry), and it is
when you describe something by using a word for something that it isn’t. This
means that the word metaphor is a
metaphor” (Haddon 19). Christopher is a very smart
person and explains many of the words he uses. For example, Christopher uses
the word “μετα” and “φερειν”. This shows his knowledge of words, although Greek is not
commonly spoken, he still knows the definition and how to use the words
effectively. The way that Christopher explains that the word metaphor is a
metaphor, is so creative and unique that it can be found to be fascinating and
also made helps the reader respect Christopher as a character much more. He is
not always the brightest person about feelings and common sense, but he is a
genius dealing with math and problem solving. Christopher has great problem
solving skills. He shows his intellect when he does his best to figure out what
is going on around him. Since he is so smart, not everyone respects him as they
should and they treat him inferior. Christopher gives us the chance to treat
him with the respect he deserves in his writing. He shows the reader that the
word metaphor is a metaphor in itself that shows the irony of it, but also it
shows how he can teach people new things and makes them think about everyday
words such as “metaphor”. This proves that The curious incident of the dog in the night-time is a must read
book because it allows the reader to delve deep into thought over something
that seems simple, but is actually not when thought about.
From what I have read in the post, I agree with the author that this should be a must read. Any book that offers profiting intellectually should probably be read. Learning new vocabulary can be very beneficial as examined in this post. I have not read this book, however as said in the thesis, this text addresses a controversial issue. That being said, I am interested in what that issue is. I am interested in reading this book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Peter that this book should be a must-read. Although, I have not read this novel, a book that makes the reader think and question the text should be a must-read. It seems as though this novel pushes the reader out of his/her's comfort zone. This controversial issue that is brought up in the novel can only be beneficial to the reader's mind. Books make people think and use their creative minds, and a book pushes the reader to think outside of their box, should be a must-read.
